Additional Background: “We celebrate this victory born out of the fight of the families of the thousands of victims of the killings under Duterte, but we also recognize this as a first step in a longer journey for justice. The killing spree continues in the Philippines, and more needs to be done to hold all those with blood on their hands accountable,” states Peter Murphy, ICHRP chairperson based in Sydney, Australia.
The International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines, founded in 2013, has been actively supporting local human rights defenders in documenting human rights cases. For the past five years, they have released consistent reports, launched an independent investigation into the war on the poor and dissent, and submitted evidence to the ICC. Additionally, they endorsed an international war crimes tribunal for the Philippines in 2024.
