One activist killed per week in Aquino’s time — Bayan

MANILA, Philippines—Militant group Bayan (Bagong Alyansang Makabayan) on Monday slammed the Aquino administration for the continued rise of extrajudicial killings, several days after the 22nd activist was shot and killed in the current regime.

“That is one EJK a week. The trend is truly alarming. There has been no let-up in the cases of extrajudicial killings even under the Aquino administration,” said Bayan secretary general Renato Reyes Jr.

Reyes again called on President Benigno Aquino III to immediately act on the rising cases of extrajudicial killings after Caloy Rodriguez, president of the Calamba Water District, was shot and killed by unidentified suspects riding in tandem in Calamba, Laguna last November 12.

“Despite government claims that killings are being solved, there are fresh cases every month. The fact that the killings continue indicates that the Aquino administration is not doing enough,” he said.

Reyes said that Rodriguez was the second activist to be killed this month. The first was peasant leader Ireneo Rodriguez, who was killed last November 7 in Batangas.

“Mr. President, how many more will have to die before government makes a decisive move against the killings?” he asked. (Abigail Kwok, Inquirer.Net, 11/15/2010)
