Beyond the Drug War: The Struggle for Peace Educates New York Community on the Human Rights Situation in the Philippines Beyond Duterte’s Headlines

Flyer

NEW YORK CITY, NY — The International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines (ICHRP) invites all New Yorkers to Beyond the Drug War, a cultural forum part of a national speaking tour called “Struggle for Peace: A US Tour to Promote Just Peace in the Philippines.” For nearly half a century, an armed conflict has been raging in Philippines between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) and the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) through its armed wing–the New People’s Army (NPA). As New York City is one of the most concentrated areas of Filipinos in the East Coast, it is imperative to spread awareness on the socioeconomic conditions back in the Philippines that incentivized migrating — the same issues that the peace negotiations seek to address.

In line with the ongoing call for a just and lasting peace, the national peace tour will hold its northeast leg from April 17-20 about the peace negotiations between the NDFP and the GRP.  The delegates will include Cristina Palabay, secretary-general of Karapatan, a national Philippine human rights watchdog; Edre Olalia, legal consultant to the peace negotiating panel of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP); and Dulphing Ogan and Josephine Pagalan, indigenous leaders from Mindanao.
